Slowly, Silently, now the moon 

Walks the night in her silver shoon ; 

This way, and that, she peers and sees,

Silver Fruit upon silver trees; 

One by one the casements catch,

Her beams beneath the silvery thatch ; 

Couched in his kennel like a log,

With a pause of silver sleeps the dog ; 

from their shadowy cote, the white breasts peep, 

Of doves in a silver feathered sleep ;

A harvest mouse goes scampering by,

With silver claws and a silver eye;

And moveless fish in the water gleam,

By silver reeds in a silver stream ;

" Silver " by Walter de la Mare is a fourteen-line sonnet that contains the pattern " aabbccddeeffgg type ". It was named for the poet " John Clare " who established much of his reputation through verse written in this poem. 

A reader should also notice the repetition used in this poem Silver. The poet has repeated the word silver at least one time in every rhyming couplet. There are also moments of internal rhyme and half rhyme. This can be seen most prominently in the first four lines with the use of words " Slowly " and " Silently " as well as " Peers " and "Sees ". All the lines range under almost the same number of words and syllables unifying the text. 

Poetic Devices Used In Poem " Silver " :

• Simile: "The dog sleeps like a log" which is line 7 creates an image in the mind of the reader of both physical shape and the immobility of the sleeping dog. 

• Enjambment: used at the end of lines 1,3,5 and 13. In this poem, the technique of enjambment prevents emphasis from being placed on the end rhyme of the lines because the lock of punctuation means that there is no pause between the end of the line and the start of the line that follows it.
