Idgah is a very powerful message giving short story written by Indian Author Munshi Premchand. It is one of the well-known stories of Premchand.
Idgah tells the story of a four-year-old boy who was an orphan named Hamid. Hamid lives with his grandmother Ameena in a small village. Hamid is the main protagonist of the story Idgah.
Hamid has recently lost his parents but his grandmother always hides this from him by telling him that his father has gone to earn money for him and his mother has gone to god to fetch lovely gifts from God for Hamid. This fills Hamid with the hope that one day his father and mother will surely be back to him. His grandmother was always used to be in a worry because of thinking about their poverty and ways to earn living whereas on the other side her grandson Haid was a positive thinking and happy child.
The story begins on the Eid morning as Hamid sets out for Eidgah with his friends and other boys from the village to celebrate the festival of Eidgah. Hamid is notably impoverished next to his friends, poorly dressed, odd-looking and he has only three paise as Eidi for the festival. The boys spent their money on rides, candles, buying toys made of clay, eating food items, and many other things and tease Hamid when he dismisses doing such things as a waste of money for getting momentary pleasure.
While his friends are enjoying themselves in different things, Hamid goes to a nearby hardware shop and purchases a pair of tongs from there, remembering that how his grandmother burns her fingers while making chapatis for both of them.
As they return to the village Hamid's friends tease him for his silly purchase, extolling the virtues of their toys over his tongs. Ignoring the teasing of boys from the village, Hamid went to his house. The story ends on a touching note when Hamid gifts the tongs to his grandmother. At first, his grandmother scolds him for making such a silly purchase rather than eating or drinking or buying toys at the fair until Hamid reminds her of how she burns her fingers daily. On hearing this his grandmother bursts into tears and blesses him with her pure heart for his kindness towards his grandmother by ignoring his own wishes.
