Poet says that it his horse might be thinking that it was very strange for them to stop in the middle of the woods. rather than stopping near a house because it was very dark and cold. It was the night of the winter solstice in late December because it was the darkest night of the year.
The horse shakes its harness and jingles bells and it looks that the horse wants to ask why the horse has stopped in the woods in the darkest night of the year.
There was total silence in the woods apart from the sounds made by the horse there was only the sound of snowflakes falling down the trees.
In the end, the speaker has a strong desire to stay in the forest but due to some promise made by him, he had to move further.
